The purpose of this anonymous survey is to collect information on how the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak is affecting the museum sector and museum workers around the world. A global vision will help us give governments a stronger and clearer response on how to support museums through this difficult time.

Two-day Master Class for emerging museum professionals in conjunction with the joint ICOM Germany, ICOM Greece & ICOM Cyprus Conference "Museums facing a Planetary Emergency", 12 – 14 November 2020.

Working towards a sustainable approach in planning and organising management in times of crisis in museums needs a joint effort. This requires capacity building, both knowledge and resources, on how to respond to such crises. Essential here is to develop good leadership through training by sharing the required knowledge of experienced professionals with emerging professionals.

The two-day training event will draw on such experts and their experience in crisis management. Experts attending and contributing to the «Museums facing a Planetary Emergency« conference will contribute as instructors to the Master Class. Participants of the Master Class are encouraged to attend the conference.

The training event will build on the insights gained by various ICOM committees during the past decades such as ICOM’s Disaster Risk Management Committee as well as previous training and awareness initiatives such as those developed by ICOM during the past decades.  Teaching language is English.

Topics that will be covered will include safety and security concepts, measures under extraordinary conditions, protection of cultural property, mass casualty incidents (MCI), acting together, training of museum staff, strategies and methods of communication with the public and public relations. Practical exercises include planning of crisis events, evacuation measures and public relations.

The Master Class is aimed at emerging museum professionals from all countries. Applicants should have at least three years of relevant museum experience and should be below the age of 40.  Applicants will be selected based on the relevance of the Master Class for their role in museums, with a special emphasis on future leadership in the museum sector. Participants are expected to act as multipliers by facilitating future knowledge-sharing events.

The Master Class is limited to 20 participants. For each participant a travel stipend of 250 Euro can be allocated.

  • A brief one-page CV, which includes information about your personal background and professional training and career, and an e-mail address for further contact.
  • A short statement of purpose (350-400 words) detailing the reasons for wishing to attend the Master Class. This should include your expectations but also how you plan to contribute to the Master Class and aim to act as a future multiplier and leader.
  • A letter of recommendation by a supervisor, line-manager or director, referring to the application.

Please note that incomplete applications cannot be considered.

Applicants will be notified about the outcome of their application by 31 August 2020.

Call for papers

Over the last century, humanity has benefited from remarkable improvements in health and in quality of life. Yet at the same time, we have been exploiting the Earth’s resources in unprecedented and unsustainable ways. Our world is now changing rapidly under the influence of human behaviour: climate change and biodiversity loss but also pandemics are just some of the most dramatic manifestations. These changes threaten the security of critical ecosystems and jeopardise the gains made over the past century in human health and well-being. As trusted sources of information and sites of transformative engagement, museums can and must play a role in addressing these issues. How should museums reinvent themselves in the face of a planetary emergency? How should we prepare ourselves for increasingly frequent extreme weather events and social unrest? What is the role of our collections and how can they be protected, in the face of global changes but also local disasters? What new roles could our institutions, and ICOM itself, play in the age of Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion?

The conference will be divided into a general part with invited keynote lectures by environmental scientists, social investigators, cultural practitioners and political activists, and a more practical part based on case studies from the point of view of museum individuals, associations and authorities that will examine possible future scenarios and inform a panel discussion. This call for papers refers to the second part of the conference. 

Topics could include for example:
- Museums as platforms for environmental discussions (climate change, biodiversity …)
- Museums facing global pandemics – rethinking the visitor model
- Climate change, extreme weather events and conservation – the challenges for collections 
- Citizen science – the role of museums
- Community engagement for the Fridays for Future generation

Participants from all countries are welcome. The conference language is English. Papers are intended for publication.

In diesem Zusammenhang erhält das internationale Medienfestival F@IMP 2.0 , das ICOM AVICOM seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten jährlich organisiert, eine neue Bedeutung. AVICOM International Media Festival F@IMP 2.0 with annual AVICOM conference from October 14 to 16, 2020 at the Airborne Museum, Sainte-Mère-Église

Dear colleagues,

It is a tradition that a museum, which was one of the winners of the annual AVICOM media festival, hosts the festival the following year. This year, the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy invites you to the festival. With the production “HistoPad”, the Airborne Museum won first prize in the festival category “Augmented Reality Application”in 2019.

The international media festival F@IMP 2.0 (Festival of Audiovisual International Multimedia Patrimony) and its accompanying conference has evolved from the original FIAMP festival (Festival International de l’Audiovisuel du Multimédia sur le Patrimoine) launched over two decades ago by AVICOM. This event aims to encourage and recognize the production and distribution of audiovisual media (audio, film and video) and innovative multimedia technologies (websites, interactive programs, mobile applications and creative and interpretive exhibition installations) initiated or produced by museums or heritage and cultural institutions throughout the world.

This year the festival has some exciting changes. For the first time, a new category will be introduced, in which outstanding and exemplary productions for the integration of marginalized groups and for the inclusion of people with special needs will be recognized (these can be audiovisual, interactive and web-based media).

Low-budget productions / productions by museums with little financial resources are also expressly welcome as contributions to the festival. The jury would like to place greater emphasis on the efficiency and effectiveness of media in reaching, animating and educating audiences, rather than how artistically and dramaturgically they are designed!

Entries can be submitted from March 30 to June 30 inclusive (deadline: midnight, Central European time).

Submitting is easy: online via the AVICOM Festival website faimpavicom.org. Just upload your material there! On this website you will find the many categories you can choose for your submission, the general conditions of participation as well as further information and festival updates. On this website, you can also view other contributions to the festival and the winning media from last year.

The awards ceremony will take place as part of the festival on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

The festival is linked to the AVICOM annual conference and the annual board meeting.

Am 8.-12. September 2020 findet die gemeinsame Jahreskonferenz des ICOM Internationalen Komitees für das Sammeln (COMCOL) und des ICOM Russland in Kasan, Republik Tatarstan statt. Unter dem Titel „Collecting Diversity: Divergence as Dialogue“ wendet sich die Tagung der Rolle der Museen in der vielfältigen und superdiversen Gesellschaft. Tun Museen genug dafür, um ihre Sammlungen für jeden, für den sie relevant sind, zu öffnen? Antworten sie auf die Bedürfnisse und Forderungen der Gesellschaft? Wie können soziale, wirtschaftliche und politische Umstände die Sammlungsstrategien und -prozesse beeinflussen?

Forscher*innen, Museumsfachleute und Student*innen sind zu Vorträgen eingeladen, die sich mit Sammlungsfragen befassen. Die Deadline für die Bewerbung ist 15. März 2020.
